The New Year often comes with the desire to make your life better and achieve some goals you may have put on hold for a long time. But that’s the easy part. Maintaining your New Year’s resolutions can be a daunting task, especially if you are on the road. You have to lay the groundwork to ensure that you remain committed, even as you move from assignment to assignment. Here are suggestions for keeping common resolutions while away from home:

  1. Get Plenty of Rest

Getting adequate sleep can be difficult, especially when you are traveling. Make sleep a priority. Sleep affects many different areas of your health. It is recommended that adults get 7 to 8 hours of sleep a day. That’s the time it takes to reach the REM cycle of sleep, where your body enters into the state of repair and your mind into deep relaxation. Thus you are able to release stress both physically and mentally.

  1. Practice Mindfulness

Don’t allow stress to eat at you. Take a few minutes to empty your mind and relax. Fortunately, meditation can be practiced anywhere. All you need is a few minutes of daily mindfulness practice to reduce the risk of pain and chronic disease due to stress. So take a break of 10 minutes from your busy schedule and practice mindfulness.

  1. Drink Water

Due to your busy schedule, you may end up not drinking enough water. You should be drinking half of your weight in ounces of water a day. Failing to drink adequate water will cause your body to store water. This can cause unwanted weight gain. As you drink more water, your body will flush out toxins and stay hydrated.

  1. Avoid Fast Food

Processed foods should be avoided if your New Year’s resolution is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. They are full of empty calories and leave you feeling hungry, thus increasing your likelihood of overeating.

Keep snacks on hand that are both energizing and make you feel fuller for longer. The best snacks are those that combine natural sugars and protein. Examples include fruits, nuts, vegetables, and Greek yogurt. Not only do they keep your blood sugar stable, but they also energize you for longer.

  1. Increase Your Levels of Activity

When you are traveling and maintaining a busy work schedule, you must make deliberate efforts to stay active. Apart from increasing your muscle mass, you will be able to maintain high energy levels. Choose options that are fun and exciting. Explore your new city by walking, meet new people by taking an exercise class, go dancing, try indoor rock climbing, or go hiking. Be creative and have an adventure!

  1. Learn a New Hobby

Traveling from city to city need not be just about work. Wherever you go in the United States, you should be able to find new things to do. Learning a new hobby can help relieve the monotony of your workday.

Depending on where you are headed to next, you may be able to learn new activities such as scuba diving, surfing, rock climbing, or skydiving. If you like reading, visit the nearest library and immerse yourself in knowledge. With a positive attitude and a willingness to try new things, you may find yourself going an entirely new direction in 2019.

As you can see, traveling is no excuse for putting your goals for 2019 on hold. By taking small steps, you can achieve everything you set out to.
